Abstract
This short monograph presents finds from medieval and later Southwark uncovered during construction of the Jubilee Line Extension at London Bridge Station. Evidence of the medieval environment includes early land reclamation and drainage. The priory of St Mary Overie and St Thomas’s Hospital stood on the site of Southwark Cathedral, but the hospital was rebuilt on the site of London Bridge Station in the 13th century. By the 16th century modern Borough High Street was known as ‘Long Southwark’ and flanked by inns, tenements and townhouses. Southwark became increasingly industrial in the post-medieval period.
