Abstract
This volume presents the evidence for Late Saxon, medieval and post-medieval development at 1 Poultry and vicinity from one of the largest excavations in the heart of the Roman and medieval city. An integrated account of the sequence, based on archaeological and documentary records, describes Late Saxon reoccupation of the site from the later 10th century, with scattered sunken-floored buildings, succeeded by more regular development of narrow-fronted timber roadside properties by the 11th century, increasing in density until the 13th century when large stone houses were built in open areas behind the street frontages. Remarkable survivals include the remains of the late 11th-century church of St Benet Sherehog.
